Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of hair fine needles into the body, resulting in the removal of blockages as well as restoring bodily functions. It is essentially painless. Although some people may experience a slight pinch as the needle is inserted, many feel nothing at all. Once inserted, the needles remain in place for approximately 20-30 minutes. Sensations may occur around the acupuncture point such as tingling, heaviness, warmth, soreness, and pressure. These sensations are normal, and mean that you are being positively affected by the treatment. Acupuncture needles are sterile, disposable, and used only once.
Generally acupuncture is extremely effective in pain relief, decreasing inflammation, improving circulation, restoring vitality and energy, restoring muscle tone, and relieving stress to name a few.
Common syndromes treated with acupuncture:
Early on, the placebo effect was dismissed as the main mechanism of action. Animals are not capable of demonstrating the placebo effect, yet, veterinary medicine use acupuncture as an effective means of pain relief in the treatment of animals. Also, acupuncture pain relief is able to be blocked by certain drugs and reversed by administering the opiate-receptor antagonist naloxone. This indicates that a physiologic mechanism is involved in producing acupuncture pain relief. Acupuncture has also been proven to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, which show its effects in combating depression and on various aspects of the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems. Acupuncture also has been proven to stimulate the release of the hormone ACTH from the pituitary gland into the bloodstream and cerebralspinal fluid. ACTH has a role in generalized pain relief, but also activates the adrenal gland to release cortisol, a natural anti-inflammatory steroid into the bloodstream.
